April 16, 2016 - International Radiation Symposium IRS 2016

View Details

The International Radiation Symposium 2016 will be held at The University of Auckland, New Zealand from Sunday 17th to Friday 22nd April, 2016.

It will follow the tradition of previous IRS in providing a forum for the presentation of the best and latest research in Atmospheric Radiation in its many forms.

A combination of plenary and parallel sessions will be held Sunday through Thursday, with Friday reserved for a local excursion. There will be an ice breaker on the Saturday evening before the programme starts, and a banquet mid week. Depending on the response, we anticipate about 300 oral presentations as well as several poster sessions.

More details on the programme will follow in due course. The abstract deadline will likely be in October 2015.

October 19, 2014 - Statement on Radiation Management for Climate Engineering

View Details

STATEMENT ON RADIATION MANAGEMENT FOR CLIMATE ENGINEERING

The International Radiation Commission (IRC) notes that the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS) as well as two of its commissions, the International Commission on Clouds and Precipitation (ICCP) and the International Ozone Commission (IO3C), have published statements of caution regarding Radiation Management for Climate Engineering. The IRC recognizes and fully endorses those statements. Based on the commission??s specific focus on radiation processes, the IRC adds the recommendation:

It is well known that modifications of the Earth??s incoming and outgoing radiative energy flows impact many other quantities coupled to radiation in the climate system, ultimately altering carbon, energy and water cycles. Thus it is generally invalid to consider changes to Earth??s radiation balance in isolation. Ongoing research, assessed by the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), has highlighted that radiation management does not provide simple one-to-one offsets of anthropogenic influences but instead, benefits certain locations or seasons while harming others. Therefore, geo-engineering of the climate system should not be implemented without considering the risks of unintended side effects. A deeper understanding and quantification of the dominant processes and their impacts on the integrated system is required, including during the periods after radiation management is turned off. The IRC considers it necessary that a comprehensive assessment of all aspects is mature before radiation management is implemented.

March 25, 2011 - Statement from IRC Emeritus President Terry Nakajima on the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

    View Details

Comments from IRC Emeritus President Terry Nakajima, who is also the President of the
Atmospheric, Ocean and Environmental Science Section of the Japan Geoscience Union,
regarding the impact of the earthquake in the East Japan area

We would like to express our deepest sympathy and sorrow concerning the serious damage and
loss by the Northwest Pacific Earthquake. We pay sincere respect to the indomitable spirit of the
people facing the serious damage caused by the earthquake and associated tsunami and who are
working to recover from this situation. As scientists, we want to express our will to make any and
all contributions that we can to ease and mitigate the difficulties that result from the earthquake
    and associated tsunami.

The government, ministries, related organizations, and academic communities are now trying to
collect and analyze all the information and scientific data associated with the earthquake and
damage caused by the earthquake, so that the public can take deliberate action based on the
information issued by the government and related organizations to minimize the adverse impacts
on public health and society. At the same time, we believe that government and related organizations
should appropriately share and transmit scientific information to ensure that the best information can
    be provided to the public.

There is a great need for scientists to carry out immediate and thorough analyses of accurate
atmospheric, oceanic, and environmental observations and models to provide advice to the
government, ministries, and the public, who rely on the disclosure of observations and data from
the government and related organizations. We urgently solicit the collaboration of all scientists to
work together toward such goals. We wish for timely and efficient cooperation among government,
society, and the academic communities to help people to recover from this unprecedented disaster.
